Mission & Vision

Center for the Prevention of School Violence
The Center was established in 1993 in answer to a series of public hearings across North Carolina about the increasing problem of violence in our schools. Originally established as a component of the Governor's Crime Commission in North Carolina Department of Crime Control and Public Safety, the Center now serves as a primary point of contact for anyone interested in stemming school violence. In just a few years, the Center has gained national prominence from its comprehensive research and innovative program support.

The Center’s efforts are directed at providing:

Information and materials concerning the prevention of school violence so that problems can be better identified and solutions can be developed;
Program development and implementation expertise and technical support to schools, law enforcement agencies, and communities so that programs have excellent chances of success;
Research and evaluation of school violence prevention programs so that schools and communities are better able to address their specific needs in effective action.

The Center's vision is that "every student will attend a school that is safe and secure, one that is free of fear and conducive to learning."
